News Crumbs – 3rd December 2014

Ah! There’s nothing like the aroma of freshly baked news to draw the readers in!

  • MojoWhatsup gets an update. It seems that Whatsapp will be implementing end to end security. It remains to be seen what impact this will have on the webOS homebrew app.
  • If you are trying to convince yourself that you really need a new TV this month, then you may be able to reduce any buyer’s remorse by checking reviewed.com‘s list of 2014’s best, topped by the 55EA9800 from LG (who also made the runner up).
  • As promised, the latest version of webOS Quick Install has arrived. Updates for the Preware domain change, Novacom drivers & LuneOS support are all included.
  • In a matching update, Preware feeds have been refreshed, so you should now see the apps added to the webOS Nation app gallery over the last few weeks. Automated updates have just been fixed too.
  • Looking to the future, take a look at this prototype app catalogue from forum user and app developer, Warlord9159.
  • Finally, don’t panic if you are here looking for the next stable LuneOS build. It has so many major updates that the whole stability thing is taking a little longer.

Don’t forget all the above accept donations (A large & mandatory one in the case of the TV). Even pivotCE could do with the occasional crust.

Guide: Coming (Back) to webOS in 2014, Part 1

** PLEASE NOTE: Following the closure of the HP app catalogue, instructions in this article involving the HP servers are no longer relevant and have been crossed out. **

So, you’ve decided to get yourself a “new” webOS-powered smartphone (or dig one out of the closet)! Let me be the first to welcome you to the family. We have suffered some blows recently, with HP finally shutting down app catalog purchases as of November 1, 2014, and closing down the Palm Profile servers as of April 15, 2015. But all of the devices and other services will continue to work, and many developers are making their apps available through homebrew channels.

We believe this is still the most intuitive and easiest to use mobile platform, and we still have the greatest community dedicated to keeping it that way!

This guide is the first in a series of guides that will help you get started with your new webOS smartphone, as there have been a few changes to the ecosystem since the official manuals were written. This guide focuses on getting your webOS smartphone activated and ready to use. Later guides will cover optimizing your device, available apps, and some interesting things that you can do which were never covered by the official documentation.

TIP: preware.net solutions for WOSQI, Preware v1.9.13

You may have heard that preware.org was snatched away from webOS Internals yesterday.  If not, what the heck?  You live under a rock?  I digress.

Long story short, preware.net is now the new home for all things Preware to include our beloved patches, homebrew apps, etc.  Don’t bother copying and pasting that as a link because until the ducks are lined up there won’t be much to see.  I’ve been assured that the Preware Homebrew Documentation app and get.preware.net will all be updated in the near future.  Come on.  This stuff takes some time.  Relax.

So this domain snatching business was pretty ugly.  Turns out “preware” means something very different to the folks that grabbed the domain and they have no intention of selling it back to webOS Internals which was the initial assumption.  No, in fact they plan to use it for whatever “preware” means to them.  Like you, I am waiting with bated breath for the answer to that mind boggling riddle. 😐

But now that preware.net exists and more importantly, ipkg.preware.net, the home of patches, apps, etc., how do you fix your broken webOS Quick Install (WOSQI) and Preware that point to preware.org?
