It is said that a watched pot never boils, but will a webOS toaster send a pop-up toaster alert to a webOS watch when the toast is ready? Only time will tell…

Enyo 2.5.1 was released on the 11th of December and has just had an incremental release to 2.5.1.1.
We have another Chicago meet up on the 11th, 7pm at Moretti’s in Schaumburg. (Note: That’s THIS SUNDAY, not the 15th – which was previously posted in error). New faces are welcome.
TCL / Alcatel relaunched the Palm brand at CES. The prior speculation in the tech press was a result of this detective work by webOS Nation forum member, ederic, who is now writing for pivotCE too!
There is some background on the webOS watch excitement from The Wall Street Journal. It seems the plan is to slowly build the eco-system. After the webOS watch, the software on home appliances (toaster?!) is also a possibility. Sadly LG seems to believe that on phones, “everyone expects Android”, so there may be a long wait for that product.

Chicago WebOS Meetup September 28th, 2014

Here is a report from George Mari:

“Just for some background, we have been having our Chicago WebOS Meetup at the same local restaurant, Moretti’s in Schaumburg, IL, every 6 to 8 weeks, since August of 2011. Well, OK, some of the Meetups have been at other restaurants, but the vast majority have been here. I don’t remember what our record attendance was in the past, but I’ve been at several meetups where we’ve had at least 12 people. More recently the numbers have been down to about 4 or 6.

We usually order some food and drinks, and just talk about what’s been going on in the world of webOS, which sometimes in the past, was way too much to fit into one night of discussion!

The Pre 2 & HP Veer in 2014

2010 was a special year for webOS. It would mark the release of the Pre and Pixi Plus, alongside something special. That something special, would be the Pre successor and the very last smartphone to ever be released, under the “Palm” branding.

The Pre 2, code named “Roadrunner” first appeared in August of 2010, as a rumor but launched in November as a unlocked developer device in the U.S. and finally an actual carrier launch on Verizon in February of 2011.

CES 2009: Palm Inc., noted pioneer of the smartphone revealed it’s ‘comeback’ device, swiftly labelled by critics as, “The iphone killer”. The Palm Pre launched to immense fanfare and positive press. Palm was known for it’s light-weight and effective Palm OS. The new webOS seemed to meet even the highest hopes with it’s intuitive, connected, gesture-based interface. The ‘river stone’ styled Pre with a slide out portrait keyboard and later it’s sister phone, the candybar form factor Pixi, had an optional back plate that enabled inductive charging on the ‘Touchstone’ dock which would become a staple of the brand.

HP attempts to sell Palm patents – again.

Yesterday we heard a rumour from Bloomberg news that Hewlett Packard was seeking buyers for some of its mobile IP, very possibly including the patent portfolio it acquired from Palm Inc.

Of course, this is not the first time HP has attempted to make this sale, but it is suggested that certain restrictive conditions have been removed to make the patents more appealing to buyers.

Quite what this implies for the future of webOS is unclear at this time. There is an Open source version of webOS in the hands of community members and LG continues to develop their TV system. LG in fact would probably be the preferred buyer for all of us as they seem to have some faith in the system and are a significant player in the mobile sphere. There is however, no evidence that they have any interest in developing webOS as a mobile operating system.
