LuneOS Update Script

The Update script in action

The Update script in action

With all the progress that the LuneOS dev team has been making recently (For example, finally squashing a nasty browser bug, and allowing many legacy webOS apps to run), it’s important to keep up with the latest and greatest LuneOS builds. When it comes to Nexus devices, installing LuneOS is a simple matter of flashing the latest zip file using ClockworkMod, it was more complicated on the HP Touchpad… until now! Read on past the jump, and we’ll show you how to get the latest stable or nightly build of LuneOS in a jiffy.

Last week, I released a LuneOS Update Script on the webOS Nation forum. This handy little tool allows HP Touchpad users to update their builds to the latest stable or nightly build. The only prerequisites are webOS (Which was required to install LuneOS anyway), at least 350 MB of space (Most build have been just under 300 MB, but of course you want to err on the side of caution), and a way to access the Linux commandline (Xecutah will do). Last but not least, you also need an existing LuneOS installation that mounts to /media/luneos-root.

All you have to download the script, set executable permissions, and follow the instructions. Meanwhile the latest image and kernel will be downloaded and installed, allowing for a fairly effective, albeit primitive form of OTA updating. That being said, it isn’t a true OTA update, as all your files and apps will get deleted, just like if you followed the wiki instructions. More details can be found on the forum thread. When all is said and done, you’ll be able to reboot into a fresh installation of LuneOS!

So what are you waiting for? Get your hands on the script while it’s still hot off the (proverbial) presses, and get updating! Or, if you want to find out more about LuneOS, here are a few links that could get you started:
