The LuneTube app.

YouTube Client Released for webOS/LuneOS: LuneTube

Yesterday, webOS Nation forum member MAMISHO released LuneTube, a YouTube client app for webOS and LuneOS, to add gravy to what has been a surprisingly good month for webOS. Read on to find out more!

It’s been a rather turbulent last few months for the webOS community. Last month we were plagued with the dreaded triangle of doom on Gmail, and of course there was the whole server shutdown thing, but in a surprising turn of events, October has not started out too badly. First of all we received word of a startup company building a webOS-powered router, which plans to begin a crowdfunding campaign next year. Then LuneOS, the other project to spring out of legacy webOS, took some major strides forward with its latest release, Caffe Latte, which upgraded some key software components and improved performance. And last but not least, there’s LuneTube.

LuneTube is a YouTube client app written in Enyo 2, making it compatible with both webOS 3.0.5 and LuneOS. It comes with a pretty sleek interface which contains shades of the open-sourced Mochi design language that was meant to bring a flatter, interface not unlike the one Apple brought to their mobile platform with iOS 7.

Using LuneTube is fairly simple. You find videos using the search box, and then you have the standard play, pause, rewind and fast forward buttons. You’re also able to toggle between SD and HD quality, which a very handy feature. Unfortunately there’s not much else available in terms of functionality, but MAMISHO has said that features such as playlists and logging on to YouTube are on their way. Videos load at a very good pace and play very smoothly on webOS, although performance is choppy when using it on a Touchpad running LuneOS. However, that is due to a lack of hardware acceleration, as well as the fact that it’s not as powerful as other LuneOS devices such as the Nexus 4 and 7. At the end of the day, it’s a very promising app with a nice interface that will certainly satisfy the need for a LuneOS-compatible Youtube client.

UPDATE: LuneTube is now in Preware in the pivotCE feed!

LuneTube is not on Preware as of this writing, but you can click on the link below where you can download and sideload it. Props to MAMISHO for taking the time to create LuneTube, it will certainly be a handy tool, especially since both webOS 3 and LuneOS lack a true YouTube client app.

Head over to the webOS Nation Forums to discuss the newest addition to the LuneOS app family!
